Registering for the ABFM Exam
The registration flow, what it costs, and the small deadlines that save you money and get you the test center you want.
The registration flow
Registration happens through your MyABFM Portfolio at theabfm.org:
1. Confirm eligibility. Graduating residents are verified by their program; your residency must attest completion by the cycle's verification deadline (December 31 for fall, June 30 for spring candidates). 2. Complete the online application during the registration window and pay the examination fee. 3. Schedule your seat with Prometric. After your application is processed you select a specific date and test center. Roughly 350 US and 180 international locations exist, but individual centers fill — early registrants get first pick. 4. Watch for your admission notice and confirm the details match your government-issued ID exactly.
What it costs
The examination fee is approximately $1,300 (confirm the current figure in your MyABFM Portfolio when you register — it changes by cycle and pathway). Registering after the standard deadline adds a non-refundable $100 late fee.
Two avoidable costs to plan around: the late fee (calendar the standard deadline the day registration opens) and cancellation fees (withdrawal is free only up to 30 days before your date). Some residency programs reimburse first-attempt fees or offer education funds that cover them — ask your coordinator before paying out of pocket.
Choosing your date within the window
The spring window offers roughly 19 test dates; fall offers about 10. Which date is right depends on honest self-assessment:
Early in the window suits candidates who have prepped steadily and want it done — and leaves the rest of the window as an emotional safety margin in case of illness or a Prometric closure.
Late in the window buys real study time, but the marginal value of two more weeks is small if you have been consistent for months — and large only if you are behind, in which case building a [steadier daily habit](/abfm-exam/study-plan) matters more than the calendar.
Whichever you choose, book a morning slot if you can. You will be sharper for section four at 2pm than at 5pm.
